How to Get to Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón sits directly on Route 1 in southeast Iceland, but reaching it from Reykjavík is a long South Coast drive rather than a casual detour.

Short answer: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is about 379 km east of Reykjavík on Iceland’s Ring Road. In good conditions, the drive takes about 5 hours each way. Most travellers either book a long guided day trip from Reykjavík or sleep nearer the lagoon around Skaftafell/Öræfi or Höfn.

Last checked: April 2026 against operator drive guidance, Vatnajökull National Park information, and current public transport references. What can change: road conditions, weather, and bus timetables.

Distance & Travel Times

From Distance Drive Time (Non-Stop)
Reykjavík 379 km (235 mi) ~5 Hours
Vík í Mýrdal 190 km (118 mi) ~2.5 Hours
Skaftafell 55 km (34 mi) ~45 Minutes
Höfn 79 km (49 mi) ~1 Hour

Note: These times assume dry roads and no stops. In winter, or if you stop at waterfalls like Skógafoss along the way, travel times will double.

Pro Tip: If you're staying in the area, you can easily explore Skaftafell tours which are located just 55 km (45 mins) from the lagoon.

Transportation Options

Self-Drive (Recommended)

Renting a car is the best way to see the lagoon. It gives you the flexibility to visit Diamond Beach at sunset or stay late for the Northern Lights.

Guided Day Tours

Guided day trips from Reykjavík are practical if you do not want to handle a roughly 10-hour return drive yourself, but they make for a very long day.

Public Bus

Public transport exists, but it is limited and much less forgiving than self-drive or a guided tour. Current surfaced timetable information points travellers to Strætó Route 52 connections, with restricted service that may not support an easy same-day return.

Which Base Makes the Most Sense?

From Reykjavík

Possible as a day trip, but best treated as a long mission rather than a relaxed outing.

From Skaftafell / Öræfi

Usually the best western base if you want easier sunrise, sunset, hiking, and better flexibility around weather.

From Höfn

The most practical eastern base, especially if you are continuing along the Ring Road.
