Katla Ice Cave

The ice cave near Vík that you can visit in summer as well as winter: how the tours work, what they cost, age limits and how Katla compares with the blue caves at Jökulsárlón

An Ice Cave You Can Visit in Any Month

Most natural ice caves in Iceland can only be visited in winter. The Katla ice cave, above the village of Vík on the South Coast, is the exception: guided tours run in every month, summer included, which makes it one of the very few natural ice caves in the country you can visit year-round. Its ice is banded with black volcanic ash, so it looks quite different from the clear blue ice caves near Jökulsárlón, and at about 2.5 to 3 hours from Reykjavík it is far easier to reach. Here is what you need to plan a Katla ice cave tour in 2026.

Katla ice cave at a glance

  • Season: all year. The Vatnajökull caves near Jökulsárlón run only from October to April, and most reliably from November to March.
  • Where tours start: Vík, 187 km from Reykjavík. A super jeep takes you to the glacier, then you walk about 1 km to the cave.
  • Length and price: about 3 hours, from roughly $180 on GetYourGuide or ISK 29,900 booked direct with Katla Track.
  • Minimum age: 6 or 8 depending on the operator, so check before you book.

The calendar above is Arctic Adventures' Katla ice cave and super jeep tour from Vík (4.6/5 from 2,628 reviews on GetYourGuide), the most reviewed Katla ice cave tour on the platform when we checked. It meets behind the Icewear building in Vík, includes crampons and a helmet, and takes children from age 6.

Where Is the Katla Ice Cave?

The cave lies inside Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, which covers the Katla volcano. Tours meet in or near Vík, about 187 km from Reykjavík along the South Coast, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours. That makes it one of the closest natural ice caves to the capital, and much easier to fit into a trip than the blue caves near Jökulsárlón, which are about another 190 km (roughly 2.5 hours) further east along Route 1.

You cannot drive to the cave yourself. The track crosses black-sand plains and glacial rivers, and every visit is guided, starting from the operator's base in the village.

Why Katla Can Be Visited All Year

The blue ice caves of Vatnajökull are meltwater channels that only become safe to enter once autumn frost stops the water flowing, and they are closed again from May to September. Operators run the Katla cave in every month, because its ice stays stable enough to enter through the summer. That makes it the ice cave to book if you are visiting Iceland in summer and still want to step inside a glacier, and a reliable choice in October, early November and April, when the Vatnajökull caves are opening or closing.

What you will remember is the striped ice. Layers of dark ash from past eruptions of Katla are frozen into the glacier, so the walls show bands of black between the blue. Some operators call it "dragon glass", a nod to Game of Thrones, which filmed some of its scenes in this part of Iceland.

Like any natural cave, it changes. Arctic Adventures warns that the cave "can look a bit different from week to week (or even day to day)", so the photos on a listing show the kind of ice you will see, not the exact chamber.

What a Katla Ice Cave Tour Is Like

Because the cave sits out on the glacier, every visit follows the same pattern:

  1. Meet in Vík at the operator's base or meeting point.
  2. Ride a modified super jeep across black-sand plains toward the glacier. Troll Expeditions gives about 40 minutes each way; Katla Track says 45 to 60 minutes.
  3. Walk about 1 km (roughly 15 to 20 minutes) over uneven glacial ground to the cave entrance. Some routes include short ladders or steps.
  4. Explore the cave with your guide, who hands out the safety gear and explains how the ice and the volcano beneath it formed.

The whole tour usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Vík, and longer versions run to about 4 hours. Guides provide crampons, a helmet and a headlamp. You bring warm, waterproof layers and sturdy hiking boots: some operators do not rent boots on site, while Troll's day tour from Reykjavík makes boots mandatory and rents them at the cave. Our what to wear guide covers the layers.

Safety

Never walk onto the glacier or into the cave without a guide: the ice hides crevasses and can collapse. Before you drive to Vík, check the forecast at vedur.is and road conditions at umferdin.is (road.is).

The Arctic Adventures tour is the one we would compare first: it has the longest review record and the lowest age limit of the three. Troll's Katla ice cave and super jeep tour has the highest rating of the three but costs about $80 more, and it meets at the VikInn hotel. Gravel Travel's small-group tour is the cheapest of the three and visits a cave the company says it does not share with other operators.

Minimum age

The age limit is set by each operator, not by the cave. Katla Track and Arctic Adventures take children from 6, Troll Expeditions and Gravel Travel from 8, and Katla Track's longer 4-hour tour from 12. Confirm the limit on the tour you choose before you pay.

Without a car: Katla in a day from Reykjavík

If you are not driving, 10 to 12-hour day tours from Reykjavík add the Katla cave to the South Coast waterfalls, with the super jeep leg starting in Vík. Arctic Adventures' Katla ice cave and South Coast tour (from $294) stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Gravel Travel's South Coast and Katla small-group tour (from $235) is the cheaper option, and Troll's Katla ice cave and South Coast day tour (from $299) adds a short hike to an icefall of Mýrdalsjökull. These prices come from our April 2026 listing data, so check the current figure on the booking page.

Best forSummer visitors and shorter South Coast tripsWinter visitors who want the deep-blue "crystal cave"

If you are visiting in summer, Katla is the natural ice cave to book, because the caves near Jökulsárlón are closed from May to September. If you are visiting in winter and want the classic deep-blue cave, book one of the Vatnajökull blue ice cave tours near Jökulsárlón; our guide to ice caves in November covers the start of the season. With a few days on the South Coast in winter, you can do both.

Combining Katla with the South Coast

The Katla cave fits easily into a South Coast itinerary. On the way to or from Vík you can stop at Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara black beach, then carry on east to Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, about 190 km and roughly 2.5 hours from Vík. Our South Coast guide and tours from Vík help you plan the days.

Tips for Visiting

  • Book ahead, especially in summer and around holidays, when tours fill up.
  • Dress in warm, waterproof layers and wear proper hiking boots.
  • Expect a dark, icy cave. Your guide hands out a headlamp and crampons; keep your hands free and follow the guide's route.
  • Leave spare time in your day, because super jeep timings depend on conditions.
  • Check the forecast at vedur.is and the roads at road.is before you drive to Vík.
