What to Wear at Jökulsárlón

Don't let the cold ruin your adventure. Master the Icelandic art of layering for the glacier lagoon.

Jökulsárlón is one of the coldest spots on the South Coast. Even in summer, the proximity to massive amounts of ice and the glacial winds mean you need to dress differently than you would in Reykjavik or Vík.

The Rule of Three: Your Essential Layers

1. Inner Layer (Moisture)

Thermal underwear made of merino wool or synthetic materials. Avoid cotton, as it stays wet and cold if you spray or sweat.

2. Middle Layer (Warmth)

A fleece jacket or a lightweight down "puffer" jacket. This layer traps heat and keeps your core warm against glacial winds.

3. Outer Layer (Protection)

A waterproof and windproof shell. Even on sunny days, the spray on a Zodiac boat tour can soak you quickly.

Summer vs. Winter Preparation

Summer (Jun – Aug)

  • Light thermals
  • Windbreaker or rain shell
  • Sunglasses (mandatory for ice glare)
  • Comfortable walking shoes

Winter (Nov – Mar)

  • Heavyweight merino thermals
  • Insulated parkas
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Thick wool socks and liners

Footwear: The Final Step

If you are booking a glacier hike or ice cave tour, sturdy over-the-ankle hiking boots are mandatory. Crampons cannot be fitted to sneakers, street shoes, or soft Ugg-style boots.

Note: Most tour operators offer boot rentals. If your shoes aren't suitable, please rent professional boots for your safety.
